Dear Rich, Episode #10
March 29, 2023
Dear Rich,
Hola! From the West Hollywood Hills of dayroom #4. What a date has been already. So much to discuss. But first, I love you and I miss you so much. 23 days until court. Still no word from the probation officer, but I’m sure she’s busy and will find a time to see me soon. I sent Jule another set of letters last night so hopefully you see those in a few days time.
So I volunteered to do extra work around the jail if they needed it. Apparently, they always pick people from my dayroom to help with things like clothing exchange, cleaning crew, and things like that. Well, this morning they picked me and I am officially a part of the cleaning crew. What. A. Job. The cleaning crew goes into the unimaginable “dayroom #2” otherwise known as the “crazies”… like actual mentally ill and unstable; and boy did dayroom #2 lives up to its name and reputation. We started cleaning around 8:15 AM this morning and finished around 10 AM. It honestly wasn’t as bad as everyone was making it out to be, however, there were some stand out moments. Let me paint the picture for you. There are 16 one-man cells. And these are the cells that have the little door slit that you slide food in and out of. Like these guys are in permanent solitary confinement. I was just in charge of mopping the dayroom and cleaning the tables and phones in the shower; nothing too grotesque. But God bless the other five guys – I couldn’t do what they did. One guy has earned the nickname “Poo-casso.” I don’t think I need to go into too much detail to explain why. Let’s just say that he’s quite the visionary when it comes to his artwork and the… Let’s call it… Mixed media, he uses to create. Another older guy, ever the gentleman, kept trying to make eye contact with me and kept doing “masterbatory movements” with his hands. All I could think to myself was, “I still got it!”…even if he is literally and clinically crazy. What a gift. Another guy, I am pretty sure was stuck in a Spike Lee movie, and was shooting the machine gun that he thought he was holding. I assumed it was a machine gun by the constant “ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba” noises he was making. Maybe he watched “Saving Private Ryan” too many times, and was stuck in the film. Who knows. All I know, is that it was an experience and I’m glad I got to do some thing different today and be of help.
Kassandra came and visited me today – right as I was finished with the cleaning crew. It was so so great to see her! The second we saw each other we both had tears in her eyes. It was so nice to catch up and talk to each other like it was any other day and we were just chatting on the phone. I didn’t want to say goodbye when they flashed the lights to let us know that our visit had come to an end. I always hate that part.
I redid Frosty’s for cornrows for his court date tomorrow. They look amazing as always. And what would you know, I got a new client! Eli. A white-ish/Mexican guy with hair that looks very similar to mine. I only did three French braids, because of the length; but I did my best, and he was happy.
Last night we got our commissary orders. There are a few guys in here that never get any store items at all. Ever. I don’t know if it’s because they don’t have money or because they don’t know or have any family members to put money on their books… Whatever the reason, they always have to watch everyone else get their commissary while they get nothing. A couple of the guys put together a “donation box” to present, divide up and give to those who never receive. A very select few people donated a soup here and maybe a chip there. I had just received my commissary order and the one that you sent me. I made a pretty generous anonymous donation last night, and the look on their faces; the happiness in their eyes was all I needed. I would’ve starved for a week to get that reaction. With that being said, please don’t think I’m just giving everything away that you send and/or provide for me. I gave some extra things that I have been collecting to help out. A couple of soups, couple, pop, tarts, cereal, bar, packet of jalapeños… Things like that. Enough to make a difference.
I want everyone to know how grateful I am for everything that everyone is doing for me. I know that my Aunts always send my mom money to put on my books and I think they would be happy that I’m sharing and spreading the wealth. Tomorrow is the 30th and then only one day left of March…and then it’s April and I have to only get through a few weeks until the court date. I’m trying to stay busy and positive. Oh! I finished “Along Came A Spider”, so I’m reading the next book in the series, “Cat and Mouse.” so far, so good – I am into it. I’m still looking forward to getting the books that my mom sent… Maybe early next week.
Also – yes, you guessed it. Thus far one of the J-Catts that got removed has been replaced with what we think is most likely, another J-Catt. Kil Supreese! Stories to follow. I love you with all of my heart and I keep playing “Unchained Melody” in my head and thinking always. Love you. The Elvis cover, of course. A hundred kisses…xoxo
Always,
Sean ❤️ POPTART
